Great Speakers - Great Content

Wed 1st June – Day 1 (AEST)

Your Host: Dr Kuva Jacobs, Founder, Lead Designer, Redpoint Consulting
Event welcoming and opening discussion.

Speakers: Keith Heggart, Learning Designer, UTS & Claire Seldon, Gamification/Learning Designer, NSW DET.
Subject: Gamification and Learning Design: Exploding the Myths.
For at least a decade, gamification proponents and EdTech companies have claimed that gamification has the potential to revolutionise all sectors of education. Numerous platforms and applications have been rolled out with promises of improving performance and increasing motivation. While it is hard to dispute the potential of gamification, the reality is yet to reach those lofty aspirations. This presentation, drawing on research currently being undertaken in higher education, asks: what went wrong with gamification? And how might we escape from endless templates of shallow games and clickable interactives? More importantly, how can we take the fundamental concepts of games and games-based learning and, using the principles of good learning design, better integrate them into efficient and effective learning opportunities?

Break Time (15 mins)

Speaker: Alexander Roche, CEO & Principal Educational Technologist, Androgogic
Topic: Learning UX: Making Complex Simple
Alexander draws on 25 years implementing over 700 LMSs to explore a methodology to create a clean and simple learning User Experience (UX) in complex software.

Learning outcomes:
•  Understand some UX design principles and why it is important in designing learning experiences
•  Understand how approach to cohort analysis and user stories can be applied to establish better UX
•  Understand how some established approaches to Web design can be applied to LMS configuration to achieve better UX outcomes including:
– Information architecture
– Managing cognitive load
– Patterning.

Speaker: Jacinta Penn, Senior Learning Designer, Workbright
Subject: Driving Creativity to Greater Heights
What would you do if a client said you MUST gamify a project? Especially if gamifying was NOT an obvious choice. In a long-term project with the University of Auckland, we created a series of topics on Digital Technologies for 15 and 16 year old’s. To drive engagement there was a bottom-line requirement that the topics be gamified. While some topics leant themselves to this easily, others were more challenging. These topics include search and sort algorithms, building websites, error control, encryption, and cyber security. This challenge pushed us to creative levels we didn’t know we could achieve. Learners explored caverns, unlocked levels, interviewed witnesses, solved bank fraud, fixed honey factories, and protected the city. Dry topics became interesting and challenging. In return it stretched our ideas about what gamification can look like. Not just a game, but a thrilling mission where learning is part of the journey.

Break Time (15 mins)

Speaker: Ravina Bhatia, CEO & Chief Learning Designer, Learning Tribe
Subject: Reimagine Your Learning Design Ecosystem
In our haste to meet the demands of a remote or hybrid workplace in the last few years, many of us have responded by replacing our face-to-face programs sometimes with e-learning and other times with virtual workshops. While this may have been a point in time need, it is time for us to be strategic in our approach to creating a digital ecosystem to support our design needs. Organisations today have multifaceted talent needs and our employees are integral to business performance. It is our responsibility to create experiences that support performance needs in a highly digitised work environment. This session will help you consider WHY you need to have a design ecosystem, WHAT should you include in your design toolkit, and HOW to evaluate if it works well.

Break Time (15 mins)

Speaker: Damla Surek, Lead Designer, DS
Subject: How can Educational Neuroscience Assist Talented Learning Designers?

Educational neuroscience is a relatively new sub-discipline of neuroscience. It focuses on exploring the relationship between learning, and how it can impact the biology of the brain and its associated structures. So, do you consider yourself a visual learner? Or perhaps you believe that the best way to learn something is by writing it? You might want to rethink that as new findings continue to show that Neuroscience has much to offer the field of learning and instructional design. This means that the popular “learning styles” models of the past few decades are outdated, as research shows that designing learning in a way that best resonates with the brain is the best way to effect change.

New instructional design models focus on brain-based design rather than individual learning patterns. Learning designers often fall back on old ways of designing content that does not align with basic understandings of how the brain learns. But we can change our habits.

Thu 2nd June – Day 2 (AEST)

Your Host: Jacinta Penn, Senior Learning Designer, Workbright
Event welcoming and opening discussion

Speaker: Anne Pensalfini, Instructional Designer & Danny Ginsberg, MD, Culture Hero
Subject: Be a Hybrid Hero: Learning Design for a Hybrid World
It’s Glassdoor’s 2021 word of the year: Hybrid. But what the hello does hybrid mean? For facilitators and instructional designers, the call to design for hybrid teams and in hybrid spaces can be intimidating. Mariel Davis, co-founder and CMO of Spokn says, ‘“We talk about hybrid work like it’s one thing, but it’s many things, and we’re still figuring out what all of those things are.” In the work world, it’s nebulous and complex, meaning different things in training courses, events, conferences, meetings, and teams. How are you meeting this challenge? In a fun and interactive session, Facilitator and Instructional Designer Anne Pensalfini shares the experience of Culture Hero and invites you to lean into your discomforts and learnings in this brave new world.

Break Time (15 mins)

Speaker: Emma Henning, Director of Learning Experiences, Androgogic
Subject: Groundswell: Learning in the Sea Change
The pandemic created a surge in the use of technology, a groundswell to embrace a safer environment to continue to learn, work and connect with each other. How has this change impacted our community’s desire to learn and how we design learner experiences? This session will highlight some innovative applications of technology that are shaping digital learning. We will look at learning initiatives that embrace the change.

Break Time (15 mins)

Speakers: Dr Kuva Jacobs, Founder, Lead Designer, Redpoint Consulting & Ant Pugh, Freelance Learning Designer
Subject: Virtual Social Learning
The pandemic has transformed employment—billions are spending more time working at home. But have we really considered how this impacted remote learning? In the spirit of practicing what we preach, this collaborative workshop will explore new ways to facilitate virtual sessions—redesigning events, rethinking technologies, maximising participation and supercharging results. Alongside practical skills for revolutionising your own events, you’ll walk away with a profound insight—that answers lie not in the strength of an individual, but through the sharing of collective wisdom.
